Meet the Lead Facilitator: Avanti Fontana
Avanti Fontana, author of Innovate We Can! (2009), leads workshops that inspire leaders and managers to adopt transformative business models. She has been a lecturer at Fakultas Ekonomi dan Bisnis Universitas Indonesia (FEB UI) since 2005, teaching strategy and innovation management at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her most recent 100-minute session on Innovation & Value Creation was held on January 15, 2025, for the Senior Management Course, delivered to 201 high-ranking military officers at Universitas Pertahanan Nasional, Kementerian Pertahanan RI. Avanti is currently teaching the Innovation & Value Creation course in the Master of Management Program at FEB UI, as well as the Strategic Entrepreneurship course in the Graduate School of Management at FEB UI.
Born in Jakarta on June 4, 1970, Avanti is a recipient of the French Government Scholarship (1997-2003). She holds a doctoral degree in management, specializing in strategy and innovation management, from ESSEC Business School, through a joint program with IAE Aix-en-Provence Graduate School of Management at Université Aix-Marseille, France. During her doctoral research, Avanti completed fellowships at Keio Business School (Japan) and Ohio College of Business (USA) in 2000. She also holds a master’s degree (DEA) in Strategy and Management from Université Paris 10 Nanterre, a joint program with ESSEC and HEC Business School, France. Avanti is an alumna of FEB UI, class of 1989, with a major in Economics and Development Studies (Concentration: Monetary Economics), graduating on July 5, 1995, with her thesis titled Pembangunan Sektor Finansial dan Pertumbuhan Ekonomi Indonesia, 1970-94: Melihat Kaitannya dengan Pola Supply-Leading dan Demand-Following.
Avanti collaborates with businesses and government organizations to develop sustainable innovation strategies and talent management policies. From 2018 to 2023, she served at Kantor Staf Presiden RI under the leadership of Dr. Moeldoko, as team coordinator for a special mission focused on studying macro talent management and developing policy innovations for national talent management.
With expertise in designing and implementing innovation strategies, Avanti is passionate about coaching, teaching, and consulting. She looks forward to sharing her insights with you during this workshop. She has traveled to various research and innovation centers to learn from and interview managers on innovation management for value creation. Since the publication of her book Innovate We Can! in 2009, she has delivered over 500 innovation sessions and accumulated more than 10,000 hours of coaching and leading workshops on innovation.

Workshop Overview:
This workshop focuses on Business Model Innovation for all managers. As highlighted by Funke et al. (2023), considering employees’ roles at all levels is crucial for driving business model innovation. Involving employees at every level brings fresh insights, fosters creative solutions, and uncovers overlooked inefficiencies, leading to more effective and innovative business models. When employees actively participate, they feel more invested, resulting in greater ownership and smoother implementation of new ideas.
The session will provide valuable insights and practical tools for managers across industries to implement innovative business models within their organizations. Additionally, engaging employees ensures that innovations are aligned with the company’s goals, making them not only practical but also relevant and impactful in achieving long-term success.

====Workshop Structure Session 1:
1.1. Introduction and Context Setting (30 minutes)
This segment will provide an overview of the workshop’s objectives, establish the context for business model innovation, and emphasize the importance of understanding the roles of employees at various management levels in driving innovation.
1.2. The Practice and Art of Innovation Diagnosis Framework (30 minutes)
Participants will explore a structured framework for diagnosing innovation opportunities, focusing on identifying challenges and learning how to assess a business model’s potential for innovation using the input-process-output-outcome approach and principles of strategic entrepreneurship.
1.3. Business Model Canvas Evaluation Diagnosis Framework (30 minutes)
This session will introduce the Business Model Canvas (BMC) as a tool for evaluating an existing business model. Participants will analyze the current model and use BMC Questionnaires to identify gaps and areas with potential for innovation.
1.4. Team/Individual Casework Analysis and Discussion (60 minutes)
In this hands-on activity, participants will work individually or in teams to analyze a real-world business case. They will apply the BMC Questionnaires to identify innovation gaps and propose potential solutions for improvement.
1.5. Wrap-Up and Key Takeaways (15 minutes)
The session will conclude with a summary of key insights, followed by a Q&A session to address any participant queries and reflections. It will end with actionable steps for applying business model innovation within participants’ organizations.
====Workshop Structure Session 2:
1.6. Simulation of Innovation Process (75 minutes)
After the opening, this session will include guided brainstorming on potential innovative solutions, followed by a team or individual activity where participants will redesign the business model to address the identified gaps. The casework will focus on key elements of differentiation and efficiency, ensuring a comprehensive approach to innovation.
1.7. Team/Individual “Confidential” BMI Presentations (75 minutes)
Participants will present examples of their redesigned business models in a confidential discussion format, followed by peer and facilitator feedback on their new business model initiatives. The session will also include an evaluation of the casework to assess the quality, impact, and feasibility of the proposed solutions.
1.8. Wrap-Up and Key Takeaways (30 minutes)
The session will conclude with a summary of key insights, followed by a Q&A session to address any participant queries and reflections. It will end with actionable steps for applying business model innovation within participants’ organizations.
